A R Rahman returned to Chennai by an Emirates flight in the wee hours of Thursday (Feb 26) at 2.30 am.A large number of people, who waited at the airport for the ‘Mozart of Madras’, cheered him up as he emerged out of the international terminal to the beats of percussionist Sivamani and Kerala’s Panchavadyam artists who gave a splendid performance.Rahman was virtually mobbed at the airport by hundreds of fans who had gathered to welcome him. It was virtually a homecoming befitting a king who had returned home victorious after a major battle. And after the grand welcome at the Chennai Airport, Rahman made his way home to Ashok Nagar where he was once again greeted by hundreds of people who were waving and singing Jai Ho….In Pics: Rahman’s royal homecoming!A visibly tired Rahman came out and sang with the crowd and told them- “ I am very tired and need some sleep as I have to get back to work and my kids have school tomorrow. I am very much going to be here and we can meet up some other time”.He said later that he’d never experienced such a welcome and he is completely overwhelmed and touched. Says Rahman: “ The kind of people who have gathered here and the kind of reception I received was amazing. They almost killed me with their love. But it feels great to be back. I thank all my fans and people of India for their great love and having embraced my music”.So what was Rahman’s message to hundreds of people who had gathered at airport and home? He said: “My message is very clean. It is to choose love over hate. In anything, be it music or life”.
